By Nazrin Gadimova
Azerbaijan will organize a high-level meeting to promote cooperation between the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on October 28 at the U.N., Azerbaijani ambassador to the UN Agshin Mehdiyev has said at a press conference in New York.
The initiative will be implemented during Azerbaijan's chairmanship in the UN Security Council.
Mehdiyev announced plans that the country intends to materialize during its chairmanship in the organization.
According to him, a mission of the UN Security Council members to Africa is to be organized in October. The mission will visit Congo, Rwanda and Uganda, as well as consult with the Peace and Security Council of the African Union in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa.
In October, the UN Security Council will also hold a series of public meetings, including debates on the situation in the Middle East, the role of women in promoting the rule of law in post-conflict situations and on the methods of the Security Council's work.
Earlier, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev said that Azerbaijan, which has an important role in the dialogue of civilizations, successfully plays the role of a bridge and is recognized by the international community as a tolerant country.
This initiative of Azerbaijan in the UN Security Council is positively assessed, Abdullayev said.
According to Abdullayev, Azerbaijan's humanitarian activities in Africa, Latin America and Asia are appreciated by the world community and Azerbaijan aims to support the development and strengthening of the countries in those regions.
Abdullayev said the priority of Azerbaijan's chairmanship in the UNSC is to uphold justice in the world, emphasizing that Azerbaijan is one of the centers of tolerance in the world.
He also said the chairmanship in such an authoritative organization sets great challenges before the country and imposes responsibility.
Azerbaijan took over the rotating UNSC presidency from Australia on October 1.
Azerbaijan assumes the UNSC chairmanship for the second time. In October 2011, Azerbaijan was elected a non-permanent member of the UN council for 2012-2013, and in May 2012, Azerbaijan led the UNSC for the first time.
