A special park for roller-skating will be created in Baku, Azerbaijani Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov said at a press conference on September 3.

The park will be created under a new bike park, which is being built in the Sabayil district of the capital, Rahimov said.

"There is no space on the Baku Boulevard for such a park. Thus, we will create it within the big bike park, which is under construction," he said.

According to Rahimov, the roller-skating park has already been opened in the Olympic Sports Complex in the northern Khachmaz region.

The minister said that the Federation of Roller Sports is operating in the country and it will deal with organizational work.

Rahimov also said the Olympic Sports Complex will be opened in the Goy-Gol region in September, adding that the construction of Olympic sports complexes has not yet been completed in the Agjabadi and Absheron regions.

The foundations of the Museum of Olympic Movement and Sports will be laid in Baku this year, he said.

The new park will be an enjoyable place for young people in Baku who previously had no place to skate except the seaside boulevard, which is always full of people, and where there is no space to take a run.

Roller-skating developed from fun to sport and now includes inline speed skating, rink hockey, artistic roller-skating, and some types of roller derby.

Moreover, rolling-skating may become an Olympic sport. On September 7-10, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee will decide which sport of the eight shortlisted sports, namely, roller sports, wrestling, baseball/softball, karate, sport climbing, squash, wakeboarding and wushu, will be added to the core sports for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Thus, creating favorable conditions for roller-skaters in Azerbaijan may be a good chance for them not only to have a good time, but also become professional athletes and participants in the Olympics.
