Azerbaijan sends aid to Iran's quake-affected region

A humanitarian aid convoy consisting of 25 vehicles was sent on Monday by Azerbaijan's Emergencies Ministry to the earthquake-hit northwestern region of Iran, the ministry said.

Humanitarian aid, sent on the instruction of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, includes 3,000 blankets, 1,000 bedding sets, 460 tents, as well as flour, rice, tea, sugar, oil, pasta, fruit juices, water and other basic foods.

Two quakes struck within 11 minutes of each other on Saturday, according to the US Geological Survey, and officials said the towns of Ahar and Varzaqan were the worst hit.

The death toll from the earthquake in the East Azerbaijan Province has reached 300 people, and about 2,500 others were injured, ISNA news agency quoted the head of Iranian Red Crescent Society Mahmud Muzaffar as saying.

Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev told Trend news agency on Sunday that there is currently no information as to whether Azerbaijani citizens are among the victims of the earthquake in neighboring Iran.

According to him, Azerbaijan's Consulate General in Tabriz continues to clarify if Azerbaijani citizens are among those killed or injured in the disaster.
