Mehriban Aliyeva honored with First Lady of the Year award

Mehriban Aliyeva, Azerbaijan`s First Lady and President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, has received ``First Lady of the Year`` award for 2011 according to a poll conducted by the influential Turkish magazine Ekovitrin.

Addressing the presentation ceremony, the owner of the magazine, Kamran Abachioglu, said that during the poll, which lasted two months, 102 figures of politics, business, art and science received 251,562 votes in 34 nominations.

Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and Kamran Abachioglu handed over the prize ``First Lady of the Year`` to Anar Alakbarov, Executive Director of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, intended for Mehriban Aliyeva.

Ihsanoglu said the Azerbaijani First Lady`s multi-faceted efforts as well as social and cultural projects implemented under her leadership have gained wide acclaim around the world. He stressed that Mrs. Aliyeva is also a cultural envoy at the OIC.

Turkey`s Minister of Culture and Tourism Ertogrul Gunay received ``The Minister of the Year`` award, while OIC head Ihsanoglu was awarded in the ``International Diplomacy`` nomination.

Principals of Turkey`s influential universities Mustafa Aydin and Sezer Shener, Calik Holding head Ahmet Calik, and the mayor of Istanbul`s Shishli district Mustafa Sarigul were among the award winners as well.
