Russia seeks closer coop with new UN SC member Azerbaijan

Russian presidential administration chief Sergei Naryshkin has called on Azerbaijan to step up cooperation between the two countries to coordinate steps on the world stage after Azerbaijan was elected to the UN Security Council, RIA Novosti reported.

In late October the UN General Assembly elected Azerbaijan as a non-permanent member of the Security Council over the next two years.

"In this regard, we have more work to be done together in terms of coordinating our steps in the international arena," Naryshkin said at a meeting with the head of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Ramiz Mehdiyev in Kremlin.

Discussions between Naryshkin and Mehdiyev covered bilateral relations and international issues.

Naryshkin also called the forthcoming congress of Azerbaijani diaspora in Moscow a remarkable event.

Mehdiyev, for his part, stressed that the two presidents struck a key note in the interaction between the two countries.

"This is a good basis for strengthening and developing our relations," he said.

Mehdiyev said the relations between Azerbaijan and Russia are at their highest level.

"There are no unsolvable problems between the two countries," he said. "All problems are being solved in a timely manner and on a friendly basis."

The meeting was joined by Sergei Vinokurov, the Russian President’s head of interregional and cultural relations with other countries, and Philip Ilyichev, deputy head of the Russian President's department on foreign policy. Also in attendance were Azerbaijani ambassador to Russia Polad Bulbuloglu and chairman of State Committee for Work with Diaspora Nazim Ibrahimov.
