Russia reportedly praises Azeri, Armenian interior ministers’ co-op despite conflict
The Russian interior minister has praised his Azerbaijani and Armenian counterparts’ cooperation as part of a CIS body, despite a long-standing conflict between their countries over Nagorno Karabakh, Armenian media reported.
Rashid Nurgaliyev, addressing a meeting of the CIS Interior Ministers Council in Yerevan Thursday, reportedly spoke about the cooperation between Azerbaijani and Armenian police bodies.
"I am thankful to Ramil Usubov and [then Armenian interior minister] Ayk Arutyunyan, and now, Alik Sargsyan, that for many years, this issue [the Karabakh dispute] has not played a role in their relations," Nurgaliyev said.
"We understand that there are issues that are resolved and will hence be resolved by politicians. Our main goal is to combat crime. As close neighbors, we have to realize that the people of Armenia and Azerbaijan should live in safety. I appreciate this approach and practical steps taken by my counterparts."
Participants of the ministerial council, who also include Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble, decided to hold the next meeting of the CIS interior ministers in the Azerbaijani capital Baku.
