Azeri soldier killed by Armenian sniper
A 19-year-old soldier of Azerbaijani armed forces was killed by an Armenian sniper on Tuesday.
Mahmud Mardaliyev was shot dead after the Armenian soldiers opened fire at the Azerbaijani troops on the frontline in Azerbaijan’s Agdam region, Azerbaijani Defense Ministry’s deputy spokesman Teymur Abdullayev said.
The two South Caucasus republics waged a brutal war in the early 1990s. Armenian forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory since then. A ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far, and sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.
