Azerbaijan shuts websites posing cyber terrorism threat
BAKU – A number of Azerbaijani language websites containing information on cyber terrorism have been found on foreign servers and shut down, an Azerbaijani security official has said.
"The activity of such information resources has ceased thanks to the joint operations of the National Security Ministry, Communications and IT Ministry and other relevant agencies," Karim Karimov, who heads a National Security Ministry department, said at a roundtable on Wednesday.
Karimov said that investigation revealed that the websites had been created to promote religious and ethnic stand-off, illegal armed groups, terrorist and radical religious organizations and making explosives.
"As a result of the deliberately distorted information provided by biased forces, a number of well-known resources and Web portals, which are used and referenced by users, are losing their credibility," Karimov told the event, titled "Cyber and national security: NATO policy and national view".
He cited Wikipedia as an example. "Very often, insidious forces post biased information about Azerbaijan there. Those who know nothing about Azerbaijan obtain false information about our country and this affects the credibility and economy of the country," he said.
Karimov said there are certain challenges in resolving the problem, but international organizations and other countries are discussing the issue and taking action to reach that goal.
"An increase is observed in the number of online resources through which separatist, nationalist and radical racist forces pursue false ideological propaganda."
Karimov also said Armenia continues its occupation policy against Azerbaijan in the cyber-space as well. "These attacks are conducted from the Internet segment of Armenia itself and neighboring countries."
The event was organized by the Romanian embassy in Baku, the Center for Strategic Research under the President of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies.
