New synagogue built in Baku

BAKU – Construction of a new synagogue has been completed in Baku, Jewish News Agency reported.

Head of the Mountain Jews Community, Semyon Ikhiilov, who visited the site, said construction had begun in late October 2010 and was carried out with the Azerbaijani president’s support.

"Owing to President Ilham Aliyev’s support, a nice synagogue was built in a short time. The three-story building has a spacious worship hall, a dining room, a library and offices."

According to Ikhiilov, the synagogue is being equipped and furnished, with the official opening of the shrine to be held in three to four weeks.

The new synagogue was built in lieu of the one located in the Winter Boulevard that will be constructed in the Azerbaijani capital. After the synagogue is commissioned, the old building will be demolished.
