Azeri paper editor seeks opening of Kurdistan mission

BAKU – An Azerbaijani newspaper’s staff have appealed to President Ilham Aliyev over opening a representation of Iraq’s Kurdistan region in Baku, Azerbaijan’s embassy in Baghdad and a consulate in the Kurdish-populated town of Arbil, its chief editor has said.

Tahir Aliyev, who heads the Diplomat newspaper, told a press conference Tuesday that the issue has been discussed with the Iraqi side. He said Iraqi officials agree with the opening of the diplomatic mission if the Azerbaijani government approves the proposal.

Iraq is home to about 6 million Kurds, said the editor of the Baku-based newspaper, which is published in Azeri, Russian and Kurdish.

"For centuries we have lived side by side with the Kurdish people in Kirkuk, Arbil, Sulaimaniya, Zangazur, western Azerbaijan, Karabakh, Ganja, and Baku," Aliyev said. "We believe that the Azerbaijani and Kurdish people are capable of surmounting all the challenges together."

Aliyev added that forging bilateral ties would facilitate conveying the truth about Azerbaijan in the Middle East.

He also suggested opening a branch of an Azerbaijani university in Arbil.
