Islamic party leader arrested on charges of planning riots
BAKU – Chairman of the Azerbaijan Islamic Party has been arrested on charges of masterminding riots in the country.
Law enforcers found Movsum Samadov in possession of weapons and materials inciting religious radicalism, the Interior Ministry said in a statement released at the weekend.
The ministry said its department on combating organized crime conducted an operation on Saturday after incoming information suggested that the leader of the unregistered party had instructed his cousin, Dayanat Samadov, who lives in the northern Guba region, to organize disturbances and call on people to carry out Jihad.
During a search conducted at an electric appliances store where Dayanat Samadov works, three grenades were found under the safe. Also, submachine gun bullets and electronic storage devices containing information inciting religious radicalism were impounded, the statement said.
Samadov tersely criticized the government at a party meeting earlier this month over the ban on wearing veils imposed in the country’s schools.
