Azerbaijan ‘attractive country’ for expats - immigration chief

BAKU – Azerbaijan has turned into an attractive country for foreign nationals, the immigration body has said.

Arzu Rahimov, head of the State Migration Service, said Azerbaijan’s conducive geographic and strategic location on the crossroads of the East and West and the North and South draws expatriates.

"The increase in living standards and setting up of new production capacities, achieved as a result of successful political and economic reforms being pursued in the country, gives an impetus to this," Rahimov told a Friday press conference devoted to the International Migrants Day, December 18.

Rahimov noted that about 120,000 of the foreign citizens who came to Azerbaijan over the past year stayed in the country, which brings the total number of expatriates to more than 400,000. Most of the incoming foreign nationals are citizens of European and other CIS states. People who hail from countries in the Americas and Asia arrive in Azerbaijan as well.
