Karabakh resolution removed from NATO PA agenda
BAKU – The draft resolution on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Karabakh has been removed from the agenda of the upcoming NATO Parliamentary Assembly session.
The resolution, drafted by Canadian rapporteur Raynell Andreychuk, was not included in the updated agenda of the session, due in Warsaw November 12-16, according to the NATO PA website.
The initial program of the session, announced on October 26, had said that the resolution would be put on discussion at the assembly’s Political Committee on November 13.
Karen Avakyan, head of the Armenian delegation at NATO PA, has confirmed that the resolution was removed from the agenda. He told Russian RIA Novosti news agency that since talks on settling the Nagorno Karabakh conflict were underway in the format of the mediating OSCE Minsk Group, Armenia had requested that NATO postpone discussions on the issue at the assembly’s session.
Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war over the mountainous region of Nagorno Karabakh in the early 1990s. Armenian armed forces have been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory since then.
