Afghans protest in Baku, claim rights abuses

20 October 2010 01:32 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU – Around 200 citizens of Afghanistan protested in Baku on Tuesday demanding improved living standards and claiming violations of their rights.

The protesters, gathering outside Grand Hotel Europe, leveled the same demand to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Leyla Nugmanova, a representative of the UNHCR office in Azerbaijan, said monitoring on the issue would be conducted, the Baku-based ANS TV channel reported. Nugmanova said, however, that UNHCR’s job was merely to scrutinize issues and provide information, while relevant bodies deal with the solution of existing problems.

Nugmanova added that the Afghans’ lack of Azerbaijani citizenship creates certain problems. UN representatives will appeal to the Azerbaijani government in this regard.
