PACE chair hopes for free elections in Azerbaijan

STRASBOURG – Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Mevlut Cavusoglu said he hopes for free, fair and democratic parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan on November 7.

"As I said in April during my visit to Baku, it can be the best gift for the 10th anniversary of Azerbaijan's membership of the Council of Europe," Cavusoglu said at a press conference on the opening of the Assemlby’s fall session in Strasbourg on Monday.

The parliamentary poll will be held in 125 constituencies based on the majority-of-votes system.

According to Cavusoglu, the organization will observe the elections. "For this purpose, the observation mission will arrive in Azerbaijan a month before election day. Later we will get familiarized with opinions and assessment of the mission," he said.

Cavusoglu said PACE had adopted numerous documents on Azerbaijan, adding "I hope that issues stemming from them will be implemented".
