Armenia reluctant on Iran’s Karabakh mediation: envoy
BAKU – The Azerbaijani government agrees to Iran’s mediation in the Upper (Nagorno) Karabakh conflict, while Armenia is not granting its consent, Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Iran has said.
Javanshir Akhundov told Iran’s Mehr news agency that despite Tehran’s efforts to settle the long-lasting dispute, Yerevan is backing down from the initiative, which renders the Iranian endeavors fruitless.
"Iran plays an important role in the solution of regional issues, including Karabakh settlement. It is for this reason that the Azerbaijani government agrees with its being a mediator in the conflict resolution."
The ambassador also pointed to the high level of relations between Azerbaijan and Iran, adding that they would expand further.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Nagorno Karabakh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. The mediating OSCE Minsk Group is co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France.
