25 September 2010 09:15 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU – Azerbaijani Parliament (Milli Majlis) speaker Ogtay Asadov met on Friday a delegation of the Italian Senate led by head of the Italy-Azerbaijan inter-parliamentary friendship group Rossana Boldi.

Asadov expressed hope the visit would contribute to developing the Azerbaijan-Italy relations.

He said the Azerbaijani leadership attaches great importance to deepening its relations with Italy. "President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Italy in 2008 contributed to boosting the bilateral ties," he added.

According to Asadov, Italy is one of the major trade partners of Azerbaijan. "So far, the two countries have signed 26 agreements which constitute a legal basis of our relationship."

The speaker underlined the role of parliaments in the bilateral cooperation. He also praised the fact that friendship groups operate in the two countries’ legislative bodies.

Asadov also thanked Ms. Boldi for the resolution adopted by the Italian parliament on the situation in the South Caucasus region.

Boldi said Italy and Azerbaijan enjoy great opportunities to develop bilateral economic, trade, humanitarian and cultural cooperation. She hailed the investment climate created in Azerbaijan calling it "favorable".

Boldi noted her country supports Azerbaijan’s position on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
