Four jailed for aiding Azerbaijan university killer

BAKU – An Azerbaijani court on Tuesday issued jail sentences to four men charged with complicity in a deadly shooting committed at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy last year that left a dozen people dead.

Three of the defendants – Nadir Aliyev, Javidan Amirov and Najaf Suleymanov – were handed down life sentences, while Ariz Gabulov was sentenced to eleven years in jail.

On April 30, 2009, a gunman broke into the Oil Academy and opened fire on students and teachers, killing 12 people. When police tried to detain him, he killed himself. Police identified the gunman as Farda Gadirov, a 29-year-old Georgian citizen of Azeri origin.

The accused denied their guilt, claiming that the actual culprits had not been detained. They also maintained they had faced severe torture during the investigation.

The indictment says that the vicious crime had been ordered by Mardun Gumashyan, an ethnic Armenian Georgian citizen. It said that Gumashyan had conspired with the defendants and convinced them to perpetrate a terror act in Baku. He also financed the terror act, investigators said.

Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies have appealed to the Georgian government and the Interpol to have Gumashyan arrested.
