Opposition parties to hold joint protests (UPDATED)
BAKU - Two Azerbaijani opposition parties - Popular Front Party
of Azerbaijan (PFPA) and Musavat - will jointly hold protests, PFPA
decided in a meeting on Monday. The next opposition rally has been
scheduled for July 31.
Musavat leaders met on Monday and also passed a decision to hold a
rally on this date.
The PFPA, which is part of the main opposition bloc Azadlig,
decided last week to launch talks on establishing an election bloc
with Musavat, an opposition party which earlier faced long-standing
differences with PFPA. The move prompted angry responses from other
parties included in Azadlig, and an announcement followed that the
bloc would cease to exist. Musavat leader Isa Gambar in turn
offered uniting with PFPA. PFPA chairman Ali Karimli termed it "a
brilliant idea", saying the initiative was feasible.
Azerbaijan will hold parliamentary elections on November 7.*
