Azerbaijan spent nearly $2m on Eurovision
Azerbaijan has spent 1.56 million manats ($1.95 million) on its performance at the Eurovision song contest this year. Part of the amount had been allocated from the Public TV budget, while the rest was provided by three sponsoring organizations.
The main sponsor is Azerbaijan’s state energy firm SOCAR, while the other two have asked not to be named, said Adil Karimli, head of the delegation that represented Azerbaijan at the popular European contest. Karimli told reporters Thursday that 80-90 percent of the funds required for participation in Eurovision are contributed by the sponsors, and this year’s spending is 30 percent below last year’s expenses.
Karimli said foreign media reports claiming the expenses amounted to 10m manats had no merit.
Safura Alizada, who represented Azerbaijan at this year’s Eurovision in Oslo, ranked fifth at the annual song contest among 25 participating countries.
Germany’s Lena won the contest, followed by Turkey and Romania, while Denmark came fourth.*
