Azerbaijan to up Afghanistan peacekeeping force: analyst
Azerbaijan is expected to increase its peacekeeping
contingent in Afghanistan in 2011, a military analyst says.
Ildirim Mammadov, director of the Military Analytical Research Center, said the measure will be part of Baku’s expanding its involvement in NATO’s peacekeeping operations.
Azerbaijan joined NATO’s Partnership for Peace (PfP) program in 1994. The country set up its first peacekeeping unit in 1997 and has been involved in peacekeeping missions since 1999. Azerbaijan doubled its peacekeepers in Afghanistan to 90 troops in 2009.*
