Opposition leaders walk out of meeting with PACE head
Representatives of Azerbaijani opposition parties included in
the Azadlig bloc and Musavat party walked out of the meeting on
Wednesday with the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly
president Movlud Chavushoglu, who is visiting Baku, an opposition
leader said.
Ali Aliyev, chairman of the Civil and Development Party, which is
part of Azadlig, explained that attendees were discontent with the
fact that Muasir (Modern) Musavat Party leader, Hafiz Hajiyev, had
been invited to the meeting as well.
Hajiyev is said to make strongly-worded accusations against
opposition leaders on TV channels and the press close to the
government in the run-up to elections. The opposition claims such
statements are made on orders from the authorities.*
