EU-funded project to promote border safety in S Caucasus
The European Union launched a project on Tuesday aiming to create a system of open and safe borders in the South Caucasus and to support cooperation among the three regional countries. The project will be implemented under the auspices of the UN Development Program. 6.3 million euros will be spent on the EU-funded program, which will take two and a half years.
"The program contains several components," says Martin Klaucke, head of Operations at the European Commission Delegation to Georgia. "The first component is providing technical assistance and the needed counsel in organizing border service, and conducting various training sessions to streamline border service. One of the key components is also implementing pilot projects."
Klaucke noted that two of the South Caucasus states – Azerbaijan and Armenia – are in a state of war due to the Armenian policy of occupying the neighboring country’s territory, adding that, therefore, hopes for cooperation in managing the two countries’ borders are bound only with exchange of information at this point.*
