Tehran’s policies discussed in Azeri parliament
An Azerbaijani lawmaker on Tuesday directed pounding
criticism at Iran’s polices toward Azerbaijan.
"Iran’s rudeness toward Azerbaijan must stop," MP Gudrat Hasanguliyev, chairman of the pro-opposition United Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, said during a debate in parliament. He also suggested that Speaker Ogtay Asadov provide information about his recent visit to the neighboring country and the discussions held there.
Hasanguliyev hit out at the burning of the Azerbaijani flag during recent protests in Iran and other actions by the protesters outside Azerbaijan’s embassy in Tehran, calling them "rude".
"How can a country whose president kisses with the head of a state responsible for the Khojaly massacre blame Azerbaijan for maintaining relations with Israel? [Armenian President] Serzh Sarkisian and his cohorts committed bloodier actions in Upper Garabagh than what Israel did in Palestine."
Speaker Asadov said he had held meetings in Iranian government agencies, and support was voiced for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity during those discussions when the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict was being discussed. "But, unfortunately, there are those on both sides who want bilateral relations to worsen. And, if we begin discussing those issues in parliament, [it will be clear that] everyone has their own stance. My stance is for Azerbaijan to enjoy good relations with all neighboring states."*
