The Guardian predicts ‘trouble’ in the Caucasus

12 January 2010 06:56 (UTC+04:00)
Trouble is in store for the volatile Caucasus region in 2010, The Guardian has reported.
"When its comes to trouble spots, the names of Ingushetia, Dagestan and Chechnya, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, Georgia, South Ossetia and Abkhazia just roll off the tongue," the influential British newspaper said in its rating of the world’s hot spots.
The Guardian rated the Caucasus eighth in the list, which examined the prospects for conflict.
"Even if everywhere else in the world is quiet in 2010, there's sure to be trouble in the Caucasus. The question is: how bad will it be?" the analysts queried.
Iran topped the rating, followed by Pakistan and Afghanistan, while the Israel-Palestine conflict ranked third. Yemen was rated with 4, Sudan with 5, Zimbabwe 6 and Xinjiang and Tibet 7. The last two in the top ten trouble spots were Belgium and Italy.*
