Turkish PM briefs Aliyev, Ahmadinejad on talks with Obama
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan held separate phone conversations with Azerbaijani and Iranian Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday. The latest developments in the region were discussed with the two leaders, Turkey’s Hurriyet newspaper reported, without providing details.
The Turkish Haberler.com website said, however, that Prime Minister Erdogan had informed the two presidents about the outcomes of his December 7 meeting with US President Barack Obama at the White House.
Erdogan told President Aliyev that he had conveyed to Obama Turkey’s delicate approach to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict. He reiterated Ankara’s stance, saying that the process of Turkey-Armenia normalization will not be completed until Armenian occupation of Garabagh has ended. Erdogan also sought US assistance in stepping up efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group, a team of diplomats co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France brokering settlement to the Garabagh conflict.
During his talks with President Ahmadinejad, the Turkish prime minister noted that "every country may possess nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, but we are opposed to nuclear weapons in our region and the world." He also said Ankara supports finding a solution to the Iran issue through diplomacy.*
