12 November 2009 11:09 (UTC+04:00)
Another swine flu case confirmed in Azerbaijan
brings the number of infected persons in the country to fourteen, according to official estimates.
According to Viktor Gasymov, a department head at the Health Ministry, the person who has contracted the strain is a Baku resident. The patient, whose condition is satisfactory, is being treated at home.
The first two H1N1 cases were reported in Azerbaijan this past July on two persons who contracted the virus while in France and Britain. The two were subsequently treated and cured. In November 4-9, the Health Ministry confirmed 11 more cases of infection. The virus carriers are Azerbaijani citizens who have returned from Ukraine and Turkey, people who were in contact with them, as well as a foreign national who visited Britain.
Gasymov said one of the H1N1-infected patients was discharged from hospital on Wednesday. Four patients presently remain hospitalized. Their condition is satisfactory, he said, adding that all the patients will be able to go home by this weekend.
Swine flu, which began to spread rapidly this spring, has killed 6,500 people around the world so far.*
