Two journalists get light jail sentences

13 October 2009 21:58 (UTC+04:00)
The Baku Court of Appeal has sentenced a newspaper editor and a journalist from the same publication to three months in jail.
Sardar Alibayli, the editor-in-chief of the Nota newspaper, and Faramaz Allahverdiyev, his subordinate, had been sued over an article about a public union leader, Tahmasib Novruzov. In July, a Baku court sentenced them to three months` detention on charges of committing an insult and libel about a grave crime, but suspended the execution of the ruling until an appeal filed by the defense is reviewed. The court of appeal considered the plea on Thursday and rejected it.
Alibayli and Allahverdiyev had been previously prosecuted for libel. In January 2007, Allahverdiyev was sentenced to two years in jail, while Alibayli was handed down a suspended sentence of 18 months. In December 2007, the jailed journalist was released under a presidential pardon decree.
Two journalists are currently imprisoned in Azerbaijan. Though the media representatives were convicted on various charges, they claim their arrests were due to their work.
