Parliament approves opening of five embassies
The Azerbaijani parliament has approved bills on opening embassies in Serbia, Oman, Libya, Lebanon, and Estonia.
Aydin Abbasov, a member of the Milli Majlis committee on international and inter-parliamentary relations, said establishing new diplomatic missions will expand Azerbaijan`s relations with these countries.
The chairman of the opposition Umid (Hope) Party, MP Igbal Agazada, pointed out during the discussions in the legislature that Azerbaijan lacks an embassy in Israel. He said Tel-Aviv is defending Baku`s interests on an international scale, therefore, the absence of an embassy there is inappropriate. The lawmaker said this was due to Azerbaijan`s avoiding tension in its relations with other Islamic states.
``But let`s not forget that Armenia has opened embassies both in Israel and in the most influential Muslim countries. Taking into account Azerbaijani state interests, opening a diplomatic representation in Israel should be considered as well,`` Agazada said.
The lawmakers also endorsed the joint statement on the Caspian Sea of the Azerbaijani and Russian presidents, as well as those on the completion of drawing the border of the Azerbaijan-Russia border and the main principles on dividing the reserves of the Samur River.
