Many Azeris favor Europe - movement leader
The leader of a European movement has said there is
an abundance of Europe-leaning people in the Azerbaijani
society.
Diogo Pinto, Secretary General of the European Movement International, told a news conference on the outcomes of his visit to Baku on Friday that there are such persons in all walks of life, including rank-and-file Azerbaijani citizens, representatives of public organizations and political parties, as well as government officials. These persons favor Azerbaijan`s drawing closer to Europe, he said.
"We will help them to achieve their goals," said Pinto. "It is for this reason that I held meetings with officials and public representatives during my three-day stay here. The main objective was to facilitate Azerbaijan`s integration into Europe."
Pinto`s visit mainly aimed to hold discussions on the Eastern Partnership program seeking to boost cooperation between the European Union and its ex-Soviet partners, co-signed by Azerbaijan, to study socio-political situation in the country and to make a number of proposals on the South Caucasus republic`s European integration. While in Baku, the movement leader met with dignitaries, lawmakers, NGO and civil society representatives.
According to Pinto, one of Eastern Partnership`s primary goals is to further the development of civil society in the six participating countries - Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus.
Pinto said his movement targets uniting Europe and achieving the triumph of democracy and human rights worldwide.
"We are trying to do this in 43 countries now, and we will work in this area in Azerbaijan as well. Though there is progress in the areas of democracy and human rights here, these efforts should be continued."
Pinto added that opening a representation of the movement in Baku was one of the goals of his visit.
