Islamic states condemn Armenian aggression in three resolutions
The foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) member states adopted three resolutions condemning Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan at a conference that drew to a close in Damascus, Syria on Monday.
The documents cover Yerevan`s aggression against Azerbaijan and its territory; provisions of economic assistance to Azerbaijan in the wake of this aggression; and concerns over the destruction of Islamic historical and cultural monuments in occupied Azerbaijani territories.
Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the OIC Secretary General, said the group strongly denounces the Armenian aggression and demands that Armenia immediately and unconditionally pull out of the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.
The opening of the OIC conference on Saturday had been attended by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. At the conclusion of the conference, Uganda passed its chairmanship of the organization to Syria.
Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war over the mountainous region of Upper Garabagh in the early 1990s, which claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about one million Azerbaijanis. Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan`s internationally-recognized territory since then. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but peace talks have been fruitless so far. Sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.
