Azerbaijan and Afghanistan have discussed bilateral political dialogue and practical cooperation between the two countries as Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Araz Azimov is on a visit to Kabul.

During the visit, the Azerbaijani official was received by President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, Azertac reported.

Azimov conveyed sincere greetings of President Ilham Aliyev to the Afghan President, and handed the Azerbaijani leader`s invitation letter to him.

President Ghani asked Azimov to extend his greetings and best wishes to President Ilham Aliyev.

During the visit, Azimov also met with Salahuddin Rabbani, Foreign Minister of Afghanistan and other Afghan officials.

They discussed bilateral political dialogue and practical cooperation between the two countries. The Afghan officials highly appreciated Azerbaijan’s support to the stability of Afghanistan and thanked for co-chairmanship of Heart of Asia – Istanbul Process.

During his visit, the Deputy FM co-chaired the Ambassadorial meeting of the Heart of Asia – Istanbul Process. The issues related to preparation of Heart of Asia Ministerial Conference to be held in Baku by the end of this year were discussed.

Azerbaijan assumed the co-chairmanship of the Heart of Asia – Istanbul process for 2017 in early December 2016.

The Heart of Asia Conference is an intergovernmental organization founded in Istanbul, Turkey. The aim is to provide a platform to discuss regional issues, particularly encouraging security, political, and economic cooperation among Afghanistan and its neighbors.

This region-led dialogue was launched to expand practical coordination between Afghanistan and its neighbors and regional partners in facing common threats, including counterterrorism, counternarcotics, poverty, and extremism.
