Azerbaijan, Iran sign co-op deals after leaders` talks
Azerbaijan and Iran signed seven cooperation agreements covering a variety of fields after talks held by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev with his counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during a visit to Tehran on Tuesday.
The papers included an agreement on lifting double taxation, memoranda in the areas of postal services, tourism and statistics, as well as ones between the two countries` libraries and on collaboration in protecting cultural heritage. Baku and Tehran also put pen to a protocol on comprehensive interaction in the economic and trade sectors, Azerbaijan`s state-run news agency Azertag reported.
During the talks, the parties voiced content with the development of bilateral relations, citing broad avenues for furthering Azerbaijani-Iranian cooperation in a slew of areas including politics, economics and humanitarian aid. Both leaders voiced support for further deepening of existing relations between the two neighboring countries.
President Aliyev emphasized that both countries represented great importance for the region in terms of stability and cooperation. "The relationship between Azerbaijan and Iran could set an example for other regional countries," he said.
Ahmadinejad noted that Azerbaijan`s rampant development was benefiting the region. He added that nothing stands in the way of Iran`s sharing the accomplishments it has made and experience with the fast-growing South Caucasus republic.
President Aliyev also met with Iran`s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Azerbaijani leader is paying a two-day visit to Iran to attend a summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) to be held March 11. The leaders of numerous Islamic nations, including Turkish President Abdullah Gul, are also in Tehran to participate at the event.
ECO`s new secretary general will be elected, the organization`s action plan for the next period and a Tehran declaration adopted during the summit.
