Exhibition on multiculturalism to open in Baku

YARAT! Contemporary Art Space, a non-commercial, privately owned organization, will present its new project dedicated to multiculturalism from September 22 to October 22 in Baku.

Multiculturalism, a new rapidly developing mindset, has sparked the public's mixed responses -- from utmost worries and aggression to faltering hope.

19 artists will introduce absolutely different perspectives on this disturbing topic at an exhibition being held in the Azerbaijani capital.

The "COMMONIST" project title refers to a universal meaning, which is broader than any political term.

A "commonist" is not a person with right-wing or leftist views, but a cosmopolitan who has to bear with altered norms of co-existence. A commonist follows universal human values in his judgments.

There are hundreds of thousands of definitions for the multiculturalism term made by politicians, sociologists, philosophers and writers. YARAT! Contemporary Art Space suggests an artistic interpretation of this tremendous and controversial phenomenon that has reference to everyone.

Each artist will put forward his or her own positive or negative, but mostly questionable definition of multiculturalism.

Founded in 2011 by Aida Mahmudova, YARAT! is dedicated to the promotion and nurturing of Azerbaijani contemporary art locally and worldwide. A key objective of YARAT! is to promote dialogue and exchanges with non-commercial art foundations both in Azerbaijan and abroad.
