BUENOS AIRES – Azerbaijani books have been used in a spiraling tower built at a central square in Buenos Aires on the occasion of UNESCO’s declaring the city the World Book Capital in 2011, the foreign ministry told AssA-Irada.

Called the Tower of Babel, the 25-meter high installation located on St. Martin Square, contains publications on Armenia’s aggression against Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani late national leader, former President Heydar Aliyev, Azerbaijan’s history, culture, literature, music, cuisine, and customs. The books were provided by the Azerbaijani embassy in Argentina.

About 30,000 books in dozens of languages have been used to construct the tower, which was built by Argentinean artist Marta Minujin.

The symbolic tower will be open for visitors for a month. Furthermore, the books used to build it will become part of Argentina’s first multi-lingual library.

The goal of building the tower was to promote the idea that the challenges of mankind could be overcome by reading and enlightenment.
