Azerbaijani companies interested in joint projects in Afghanistan

Afghanistan intends to boost its cooperation with Azerbaijan in overall fields.

Afghanistan’s President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, who is an official visit to Baku, made the remark as he met Azerbaijani entrepreneurs.

“There are good prospects for development of economic relations between Azerbaijan and Afghanistan,” the President added.

Ghani said there were great opportunities for implementing joint projects of Afghani businessmen with Azerbaijani entrepreneurs.

Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Niyazi Safarov, for his part, said relationship of the heads of the states created fruitful condition for further development of Azerbaijani-Afghani economic ties.

Safarov spoke of the opportunities for realizing the joint investment projects. “Azerbaijani companies were interested in implementing joint projects in Afghanistan.”

The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Afghanistan amounted to $173.76 million in January to October, which is by 22.2 percent less than for the 10 months of 2014, according to the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee. Azerbaijan does not import goods from Afghanistan.

Geography also played an important role in bringing the two nations together. Azerbaijan, with its great experience in the oil sector has attracted Afghanistan’s economy. Also, Afghanistan is interested in the electricity production via natural gas, the mining sector and petroleum.

Azerbaijan’s State Oil Company SOCAR can become a marvelous solution and initial guide for other oil companies. SOCAR has already assisted in the launch of an oil refinery in Mazar-i-Sharif in 2013.

The diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Afghanistan were established on November 16, 1994. Azerbaijani ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is concurrently accredited to Afghanistan. The embassy of Afghanistan to Azerbaijan was opened in November, 2012.
