Azerbaijan among CIS states favored by labor migrants: ILO

Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan receive the most labor migrants in CIS next only to Russia, the International Labor Organization (ILO) has said in a report on global employment trends in 2012.

The ILO also said that since labor migrants are mostly hired illegally in these countries, they are the most prone employees in terms of various forms of discrimination and staff-cuts.

Azerbaijanis who head to Russia to seek employment account for only 8.7 percent of the total number of labor migrants in the country. For comparison’s sake, Armenian nationals working in Russia constitute 13.7 percent, while those of Uzbekistan – 16.3 percent, and Ukraine 17.6 percent.

The report stressed that Azerbaijan’s government has made vigorous efforts in recent years to open jobs in the country and reduce the impact of the world economic crisis on the domestic economy.

The ILO said there is an urgent need to open about 600 million jobs to ensure social stability and economic growth in the world. Some 900 million people worldwide are currently either looking for jobs or earning only $2 per day.
