Azerbaijan ahead of many Asian states on transport infrastructure: ADB

Azerbaijan surpasses a number of Asian countries on the development of transport infrastructure, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) representative in the country has said.

Olly Norojono told a conference in Baku on Wednesday that Azerbaijan’s investments in the domestic road sector surged to over $1.3 billion in 2010 from $347 million in 2007.

Norojono said the priority areas of the transport sector for the country’s government include rehabilitation and repair of rural roads, logistics and border crossings.

"The length of highways in Azerbaijan is currently over 4,000 kilometers, while that of rural roads is 14,000 kilometers. Placing capital in rural roads is important and Azerbaijan should pay attention to this issue, because their normal condition facilitates the access of agricultural goods to the market. Azerbaijan should also attend to its logistics and border crossings, as this is important to reduce delays in transportation."

Norojono added that the ADB will heed attention to the South Caucasus republic’s transport sector in the future, in particular, railways.
