BAKU – Construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway that will link Azerbaijan with Turkey through Georgia will be completed by the end of 2012 and it will be commissioned in early 2013, Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov has said.

He told an international transport exhibition, Trans-Caspian Azerbaijan 2011, that opened in Baku Thursday that the Marmaris project, which envisions building a railway tunnel under the Bosporus Straits, will be completed in Turkey in 2013, paving the way for transporting cargo to Europe via the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway.

Under the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project, a new rail line stretching for 105 km will be built, including 76 km in Turkey and 29 km in Georgia. Moreover, an existing section of the railway will be upgraded in Georgia, which will increase its annual throughout capacity to 15 million tons of cargo. Initially, the capacity will be 6.5 million tons of consignments and 1 million passengers.

Mammadov added that an international trading seaport will be partially launched in mid-2014 in the Alat settlement, 80 km south of Baku.
