Azeri workers to set up trade union in Russia
BAKU – Azerbaijani citizens working in Russia will be represented in a trade union, the first such organization being established abroad, Azerbaijan’s trade unions body has said.
Chairman of the Confederation of Azerbaijani Trade Unions (CATU), Sattar Mehbaliyev, said that according to an agreement reached with the neighboring country’s umbrella group of trade unions, an organization comprising Azerbaijanis working in the city of Yekaterinburg will be set up "to protect their social and labor rights".
The agreement envisions providing the new trade union with an office free of charge. Azerbaijan, in turn, will initially render financial assistance to pay salaries to its employees.
"We will be assisting them until they have provided themselves with sources of funding," Mehbaliyev said.
According to the CATU head, such agreements will be signed in the future with other cities and provinces of Russia densely populated by Azerbaijanis, including St. Petersburg and Tyumen, as well as other countries including Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Turkey.
