Minister: German companies’ interest in Azerbaijan ‘growing’
German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has said German companies’ interest in the Azerbaijani market has been growing in past years. The statement was made in a meeting on Tuesday with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov, who is paying an official visit to Germany, according to the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry.
Westerwelle said this interest was due to the South Caucasus republic’s being a reliable partner and providing favorable conditions for investments.
Mammadyarov, for his part, said the German and European markets were "sustainable, profitable and predictable" for Azerbaijan.
Westerwelle expressed hope for a speedy signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on energy policy dialog between the two countries’ foreign ministries.
He said the Nabucco project, which aims to deliver Azerbaijani and Central Asian gas to the EU, was supported by the German government, noting that the agreement signed by the coalition within his country’s government expresses this stance.
Discussions also touched upon issues of the rule of law and democracy envisaged by the Eastern Partnership program that aims to boost cooperation between the European Union and its ex-Soviet partners.
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister met with members of the Christian Democratic Party in the Bundestag and MPs.
During the visit Mammadyarov also took part in the event, organized by Cerberus Fund, where he delivered a speech on foreign and energy policy of Azerbaijan, the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict. *
