Slovakia keen on closer economic ties with Azerbaijan
Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak has said his country was dissatisfied with the level of its economic relations with Azerbaijan, saying bilateral ties are considerably below both countries’ potential. The statement was made during a press conference after talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Elmar Mammadyarov, in Baku on Monday.
The Slovakia-Azerbaijan trade turnover is currently slightly over $11 million, according to Azerbaijani official estimates.
Lajcak, who arrived in Baku with a broad delegation of businessmen, said Slovak companies are interested in investing in a variety of fields of the Azerbaijani economy, including road construction, energy, building hydro-power plants, agriculture, environmental protection and the construction sector.
"Today we agreed to set up an inter-governmental commission on economic cooperation and to simplify visa regulations between the two countries. Also, we held talks as part of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership program and on energy security."
Mammadyarov, for his part, said Azerbaijan was interested in developing economic relations with Slovakia.
"We consider as important strengthening our bilateral relations. We have decided to raise economic relations between the two countries to a high level," he said.*
