3G technologies at Azerbaijan’s doorstep
"Third-generation" (3G) technologies will begin to be applied in Azerbaijan’s cellular communications market by the end of 2009.
The advanced standard, developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), enables the use of fast data transfer, video-phones and mobile TV services.
The conveniences require 3G-supporting cell phones, and Chinese companies have offered Azerbaijan’s cellular operators such services. Prices for such phones depend on the brand used.
Two of the three cellular providers operating in the country have said they were preparing to apply the 3G standard and have conducted preliminary presentations of such services for their customers.
With recent amendments to the national legislation, the cost of a license for providing 3G cellular services was set at 11,000 manats ($13,750). The Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies is reviewing relevant bids filed by cellular operators Azercell and Azerfon. According to Minister Ali Abbasov, the two companies have been instructed to prepare their networks for the application of 3G technologies. He said there will not be any problems with granting the licenses, and the new service will be available by the year-end.
Cutting-edge 3G technologies are being applied in a number of countries, and, in some, cellular communication based on the remarkable fourth-generation technologies is already available.*
