Knowledge transfer comes to the fore
German companies active in Azerbaijan are seeking efficient local partner institutions, favorable entry regulations and a better climate for long-term investments.
The fact that around 130 German and Azerbaijani organisations participated in the 10th joint business forum on August 12, held by the Germany-Azerbaijan Business Association (DAWF), indicates mutual attraction of both countries.
During his opening speech at the forum, Guenther Oettinger, the State Prime Minister of Baden-Wuerttemberg, revealed that, this time, he aims to intensify cooperation between medium-sized companies, although energy issues remain of utmost significance.
In view of these growing business activities arises the question of possible cooperation options in Azerbaijan. German companies tend to explore thoroughly Azerbaijan`s market when it comes to long-term investment.
Since 2004, exports and imports have grown six times. In 2008 imports to Germany exceeded $1.859bn euros and exports from Germany - 532.4m euros, according to the May 2009 Germany Trade and Invest publication. Moreover, the number of DAWF members has doubled and now amounts to 94. German companies have gained success with their products and are willing to establish their branches in Azerbaijan contributing to the overall knowledge transfer between the two countries.
This kind of transfer plays one of the major roles in German-Azerbaijani economic relations significantly facilitated by the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) involved in boosting the Azerbaijani private sector and reforming the country`s legal and civil service systems.
Among recent successes of the GTZ`s Private Sector Program is the establishment of tea and textile associations. Associations, as intermediaries between companies and the government, express interests and formulate the needs of a particular industrial group, and lately have not been a part of the general business practice in Azerbaijan.
The projects launched by the GTZ have been endorsed by the Azerbaijani government and private organizations, though they often mean reorganisation of the established economic structures. Currently, eight experts selected by the CIM, Centrum f?r internationale Migration und Entwicklung, the partner of the GTZ, are working in Azerbaijan in different areas contributing to its development on the path to free market economy.
