A million unfit cell phones on sale: researchers
About one million unusable cellular phones are on sale in the Azerbaijani market, a local research group has found.
According to the Quality Development Research Center, which is monitoring the situation, the shadow turnover of mobile phones accounts for 20 percent of total phone sales. The researchers have also found that fake warranty papers are being granted to buyers.
Such phones are mainly made in South Korea, China and Dubai. The delivery of low-quality phones is mainly due to their being lucrative for the importer. Unlike European countries, they are brought from these states at special prices, assembled in workshops and then released into circulation. As for sales, their low price is attracting a huge number of buyers in the domestic market.
Another problem facing Azerbaijan`s cellular phone market is the sale of used phones that are represented as new. In many cases, the appearances of low-quality used phones are altered in local workshops, and are then sold to consumers as new. As a result, buyers become disappointed after the phones stop working in a short time.
According to the State Statistics Committee, there are currently 5.2- 5.3 million cellular phones in the country, which has a population of 8.5 million people.
