Thyssenkrupp Elevator, one of the world's leading elevator companies, won the tender of Baku Metro to supply 25 escalators within the next three years.

The contract, amounting to tens of millions dollars, includes supply of eight high-rise escalators for Sahil and Khatai subway stations, as well as 17 escalators for a new station. With a 48.7 meter traveling height, the 4 escalators for the Khatai station will be the highest ones ever produced by Thyssenkrupp Elevator.

Thyssenkrupp Elevator CEO Andreas Schierenbeck, commenting on the deal, said that the company can increase the metro stations’ capacity by as much as 30 percent and ensure efficient passenger flow of around 222 million commuters each and every year with the supply of advanced mobility solutions to Baku Metro.

“This is a significant improvement, and we are proud to provide this support as Baku continues its journey to become an efficient and future-proof city,” he said.

The new high quality products and services in Baku will revolutionize the ability of the metro stations to cope with increasing passenger numbers, and bring the city in line with the modern-day transport demands of its 2.15 million people, the company reported.

“It is essential to find new solutions for people transportation that save time and reduce consumption of energy and environmental resources in all markets around the world. As a business we support cities with innovative solutions that meet the requirements of urbanization, and we are pleased that through our distributor network our reach and urban footprint can continue to grow even further,” added Schierenbeck.

The Baku models will be narrower than previous solutions, without reducing the comfort and room that passengers are accustomed to. This is achieved by an innovative approach of installing the drive (motor and gears) deep in front of the installation, rather than in the supports for the stairs as usual. This will allow more people to travel down to the platform or up to the concourse at the same time, increasing the capacity of the escalators in the shafts by as much as 50 percent.

Currently, Baku Metro consists of 3 lines and 25 stations.

The conceptual development scheme envisages the expansion of the existing infrastructure in phases by 2030, and the creation of a huge underground transport network. Baku Metro will consist of five lines, 76 stations and 119 km-long network of underground tunnels. Some 53 new metro stations will be built until 2030.

ThyssenKrupp is a German multinational conglomerate, which officially began its work on March 17, 1999. The concern is the world's leading producer of tailored blank steel, elevators and escalators.

Thyssenkrupp generates 33 percent of its consolidated sales in its home market. The rest of the EU (European Union) - 28 percent and the NAFTA region (The North American Free Trade Agreement) - 21 percent are the key trading partners for business and exports outside Germany.
