Azeri-Turkmen body to meet

17 January 2008 18:13 (UTC+04:00)
The first broad meeting of the Azerbaijan-Turkmenistan intergovernmental commission will be held in Ashgabat on Thursday, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
Khazar Ibrahim told reporters that ways of expanding relations between the two countries would be in focus.
The commission is co-chaired by Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Yagub Eyyubov. Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov will also arrive in Ashgabat to attend the discussions.
Ibrahim did not rule out that the legal status of the Caspian Sea - an issue disputed by the coastal nations for many years - would be tabled as well.
Turkmenistan put on hold diplomatic relations with Azerbaijan in 2001 due to differences over the status issue and the latter's overdue debt for the gas imported in the 1990s.
The two countries set up an intergovernmental commission after the election of a new president in Turkmenistan in 2007 in a bid to restore bilateral relations and iron out the discrepancies.
