Pavel Eljanov:"My play was too soft at many points"

Pavel Eljanov was once again the last Ukrainian player to finish; and yet again he drew his game to secure an important victory for his team, this time against China, the defending champions. Susan Polgar invited him to the Press Center for a chat.

- Congratulations to you and your team! Tell us about your game.

Well, I was better all the time after the opening, but maybe my play was too soft at many points. This was also because I saw that our situation as a team is quite good in the match. Maybe at some point I was much better, perhaps even very close to victory, but I didn’t see a forced way to win. I tried to calculate everything but I couldn’t see a clear path, so then I decided to just play this superior knight ending; I was better, but it seems it was not enough, so the game ended in a more-or-less logical draw.

- You are a very experienced Olympian; this is your seventh such event. How many gold medals have you won with the Ukrainian team so far?

I have two gold medals so far (ed: 2004 & 2010).

- Well then, we’re wishing you a third one!
