Azerbaijan begins new chapter in Europe's sports history
First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, who is also the Chairperson of the
Baku 2015 Organising Committee, welcomed the participants and the
spectators at the grand opening of the inaugural European Games in
Baku on June 12.
"President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, President of
the European Olympic Committee Patrick Hickey, President of the
International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach, European Games
athletes, ladies and gentlemen, dear guests, welcome to Azerbaijan,
welcome to the inaugural European Games," said the first lady of
Azerbaijan.
Mehriban Aliyeva said that tonight Azerbaijan began a new chapter
in Europe's sports history.
"Azerbaijan is proud that the First European Games are being held
in Baku," she said.
"At the sacred temple of Ateshgah the European Games flame was lit
and traveled across our beautiful country, touching the heart of
every Azerbaijani," she said.
Azerbaijani first lady said the flame carried the message of
celebration, inspiration and unity.
