Ten torchbearers then started their 2.6km long route and carried the flame into Heydar Aliyev Park to the sound of wild applause.
Prizewinner of the European Taekwondo Championship Joshgun Nadirov lit a commemorative lamp of the European Games. The commemorative lamp will remain lit in Heydar Aliyev Center until the end of the Games.
The event featured video demonstration of a footage highlighting a ceremony to light the flame of the Baku 2015 First European Games in Ateshgah temple.
The ceremony was followed by a concert.
Tovuz, enjoying a peculiar nature is one of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus, which made the region rich with archeological sites.
The archaeological site of the Neolithic period Goytapa located here is the biggest settlement relating to the early Neolithic period in Azerbaijan and South Caucasus. Located on the tourist route, the site will soon be available for tourists interested in studying and witnessing the early gleams of civilization as we know it, in an open-air museum.
Another prehistoric monument, the oldest one in the region, was discovered here in 2014, in the Haji Alemkhanli village, dates from the end of the seventh millennium BC.
There are an additional 64 historical-cultural and archaeological monuments in the Tovuz region.
Guests of Tovuz should taste its meal. Khingal is the most famous eating of Tovuz cuisine. Different sorts of pilaf and barbecue, fried vegetables and fresh salads are also ‘must eat’ in the region.
The Journey of the Flame is bringing the spirit of Baku Games across Azerbaijan from April 26. In some 48 days, the spirit of Baku 2015 will inspire 60 regions across Azerbaijan, to finally arrive in the magnificent Baku National Stadium on June 12.
